The Production Process
70 blind and partially sighted people now receive the Bridgwater Talking News each week so the production and distribution process has to be organised effectively.
We currently have around 25 local volunteers, most giving just an hour or two every few weeks. There are many tasks involved in the weekly production cycle. Volunteers all give their time to ensure that each and every listener receives their edition of the news on time, and in good condition.
Every week returned items from the previous week are delivered by post. The wallets are used with Velcro closures and have a panel for the recipient's address which when reversed shows that of BTN.
Each memory stick is taken out of the pouch and  are checked against the database of listeners.  A further check is made to see if a message or letter from the listener has been included. The pouches are prepared with address labels and are then ready for use again. During the week the volunteer editors will review the local newspapers either by taking cuttings or using email feeds direct from the publishers.  No censorship of articles take place. However lengthy reports may edited if the key points can be extracted.

On Wednesday evening the editor distributes the articles to be read among the readers usually four. The session is recorded "as live" and any corrections are made as the recording progresses. We use a computer to record the articles and recordings can therefore be edited quickly if any one  makes a mistake.

Readers are expected to read the articles without bias to reflect the piece as written and try to use a way of speaking similar to that they would use if present as a guest in the room of the listener.

However we don’t always correct small errors as they would not be in normal conversation and our Readers try hard not to sound like BBC news readers. We try to record local news for local listeners.

Copying The  Memory Sticks

The team then creates a master copy and then copies for distribution.

Quality Control & Dispatch

All items are checked and they are placed in the pouches which have previously been sorted and made ready with the listener's address labels visible. Each week's edition is then posted and listeners will normally receive their copy within a day or two.
